Urban Sustain is a non-profit organization and received 501(c) 3 status in 2006. An informational meeting was held in a community on Chicago's southside was held to discuss the lack of environmental health services, healthy food selections and inferior communty outreach in low income neighborhoods . The meeting was well received by the local churches and educational establishments. The need for environmental health awareness to prevent health disparities was seen as a gap that must be filled. Thus, the Urban Sustainability Authority, aka Urban Sustain was created.
