Urban Sustain is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005 and received 501(c) 3 status in 2006. In December 2004 a informational meeting was held in South Shore, a community in Chicago, Illinois was held to discuss the lack of environmental services, healthy food selections and inferior communty outreach. The meeting was well received by the local churches and educational establishments. The need for environmental health awareness to prevent health disparities was seen as a gap that must be filled. Thus, the Urban Sustainability Authority, aka Urban Sustain was created.
